Greece has named only 22 athletes to its world championships team. Less is not more this year, as the team is without Greek champions Piyi Devetzi and Kostas Douvalidis, both out due to injury. The team is also caught in a time warp, as it has seen top names retire in recent years but must wait a year or two for its young rising stars to emerge on the big stage.
Nevertheless, there is a little of both on the current team. It includes veterans like Pericles Iakovakis, whose performances have so bewildered him this year he thought about not going to Berlin, and long-jumper Louis Tsatoumas. It also offers a glimpse into the future of Greek track, with such youngsters as Parashevi Papachristou in the triple jump, who won a gold medal, and Spyros Lembesis in the javelin, who won a bronze medal, at the recent Euro Under-23 Championships.
