ATHENS, Greece (HA.com) – Athens was the latest stop on the athletics circuit today as it hosted the Athens Grand Prix ‘Tsiklitiria,’ an event that has in the past seen tremendous performances including world records in the 100m.
|
The men’s 100m was not the standout this year however, as the winner, Travis Padgett of the US, went 10.09 seconds into a slight headwind. The US national champion Mike Rodgers was third in 10.10. There were no Greek athletes entered in either the men’s or women’s 100m.
The only Greek athlete to finish amongst the leaders today was Louis Tsatoumas, who was beaten on the final attempt in the long jump by former Texas A&M NCAA Champion Fabrice Lapierre with an 8.24m. Tsatoumas was second with 8.21.

LaShawn Merritt, the Olympic 400-meter gold medallist, won that event in 44.54 seconds, a meet record and the second-best time this year behind his own 44.50.
Women's 200m Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown won the 100m, finishing in 10.96 seconds and beating Carmelita Jeter of the US.
Yargelis Savigne of Cuba, the reigning world champion in the triple jump, went a world leading 15m to win the event that was missing the Greek champion Piyi Devetzi, out with an injury.
And in the 400m hurdles, Jamaican Isa Philips was the victor in 48.09. Greece’s Periklis Iakovakis was a disappointing 6th in front of his home crowd with a 49.52, well off his personal and national record of 47.82 set in 2006.
