The most important domestic weightlifting competition, other than the Pan-Hellenic weightlifting championships, was held this past Saturday at Agios Kosmas in Athens as well as in Thessaloniki in northern Greece, where in all roughly 150 lifters took part in the Select Southern Greece and Macedonia-Thrace combined competition.
National team head coach Christos Iakovou was quite pleased with the performances, noting that expectations were met, with many athletes in superb condition.
Dimitris Papageridis, the "Greek Giant" from Serres, equalled his PB in the snatch at 190 kgs and successfully lifted 230 kgs in the clean and jerk to set a new Greek record in the +105 kgs category with a combined lift of 420 kgs.
Also in very good condition was Nikos Kourtidis, who competed in his new weight category at 105 kgs. While weighing in at only 99.99 kgs, Kourtidis lifted 170 kgs in the snatch and 215 in the clean and jerk on his second attempt. He did not attempt 220 kgs on his 3rd attempt, after consulting with the coaching staff.
Over the next two years Kourtidis will further entrench himself within the 105 kgs group, where Iakovou told the Greek daily "Kathimerini" he believes a total combined lift of 410 kgs may be good enough for a medal at Beijing 2008 (185+225 or 183+227).
