Vladimiros Lazaridis, the 19-year-old weightlifter competing in the 69 kgs division at the European Junior Weightlifting Championships in Palermo, Italy, got the Greek team off to a very good start today with 2nd place finishes across the board for 3 silver medals.
He lifted 131 kgs in the snatch, 170 kgs in the clean & jerk for a total of 301 kgs, finishing behind Tigran Martirosian of Armenia, who won gold in all three categories with a total of 330 kgs.
Lazaridis, who broke his own Greek junior record in the clean & jerk, which stood at 168 kgs, dedicated his medals to his parents and said that he will continue his preparations for the World Championships next month.
On the women's side, Maria Pipiliaridou finished in 7th place in the 53 kgs division. She lifted 67 kgs in the snatch for 6th place, 85 kgs in the clean & jerk for 8th place and a total 152 kgs overall for 7th place.
Coach Valerios Leonidis, once a member of the fabled Greek weightlifting "Dream Team" of the 1990's, noted the great start today, saying he knew the lifters were in excellent shape and therefore expected good results early on.
