The European Junior Weightlifting Championships get under way tomorrow in Palermo, Italy, and will run through 9 September.
| Greece is sending five lifters. The first group comprising Vladimiros Lazaridis, Maria Pipiliaridou and coach Valerios Leonidis departed yesterday, however the two athletes’ luggage has been misplaced by the airline. If not found immediately, this could pose a serious problem for their preparations. They compete on Wednesday.
The remainder of the team is scheduled to leave Greece on Thursday, and compete on Saturday.
National team head coach Christos Iakovou noted that the team has worked very hard at its training centers in Cyprus and Agios Kosmas in Athens, and that he expects good results in Palermo. He added that Nikos Kourtidis, who ordinarily competes in the 94 kgs division, would compete with the 105kgs group thereby avoiding having to hit the 94kgs weight limit twice so close to the World Championships next month in Santo Domingo – an Olympic Qualification Event.
The World Championships take place in the Dominican Republic capitol from September 27 through October 7.
