The HellenicAthletes.com website was developed in early 2006 by Christopher G Galakoutis (read Bio), a long time fan of Hellenic sports. Often critical of foreign media coverage and reporting of Greek athletics -- particularly in the lead-up to the Athens 2004 Olympic Games -- he believed another voice was needed, one that would provide clear, English language reporting of Greek sports in general and athletics in particular.
|
Further impetus was added when in early 2001, while living and working in New York City, Mr. Galakoutis read about a young Greek-Canadian athlete in a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation documentary entitled "Running on Empty."
The athlete was 100m sprinter Nicolas Macrozonaris, whom Mr. Galakoutis went on to meet.
That documentary highlighted the difficulties encountered by young athletes in trying to obtain corporate sponsorship, and so initially this site aimed to provide a platform for those athletes.
The site has since evolved to one that provides news and commentary about the worldwide Athletics scene, while also holding true to its early foundation of also reporting on Greek sport.
