Guilty verdicts & 31-month suspended sentences announced in Greek sprinter case <0>

A Greek court has found sprinters Kostas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou guilty of making false statements to authorities over an alleged motorcycle accident just before the 2004 Athens Olympics.

"The court finds that this accident never occurred," judge Dimitris Lefkos said today in Athens prior to adjourning the case to deliberate with his fellow judges on the question of jail time, which was proposed by the public prosecutor.

There will be no jail time, as the judges returned to announce a 31-month suspended sentence for Kenteris and Thanou, and a 33-month suspended sentence and 5,000 Euro fine to coach Christos Tzekos.

Closing argument made by Tzekos/Thanou attorney in Greek sprinter case <0>

The lawyer for Christos Tzekos and Katerina Thanou provided his closing argument this past Tuesday in Athens, at the trial in connection with an alleged motorcycle accident on the eve of the Athens Olympic Games involving Ms. Thanou as well as her then training partner Kostas Kenteris.

Nikos Kollias, speaking before a Three Member Criminal Court, stated that not only was there no proof a motorcycle accident had been staged, but in order to believe it had been would necessarily mean that every witness called in the case had provided false testimony.
